People love to hate this movie but I disagree.
Michael Mann is a true wizard of night cinematography; and I believe this was also one of the first big screen movies to be shot on digital. To the trained movie eyes, it’s obvious. But digital had a huge advantage - they were able to shoot night scenes with natural light (very little artificial lighting)... and it’s just gorgeous, saturated, and da rk - all at the same time.
Look at this scene below for example. It’s perfect. The camera tilt, the searchlight from the helicopter, the flamethrower exhaust(!!) on the F-430.
Miami. Convertible. Night. Vice.
The sounds, and the lack of sounds. The way Tubbs makes a phone call and you don’t need to hear what they say on the other end. Sound effects fade out. It all makes perfect sense. Fantastic storytelling. How come this did not get awards for best director?
There is also the gang shootout scene (viewer discretion blah blah blah). I remember seeing it in the theater for the first time and almost fell out of my chair. Shit got real!
I also strongly believe that this was the movie that made white cars popular, literally overnight. With this single scene:
And many many more cars!
Maybe after all, this movie just too early for its time. Do yourself a favor and watch it, you’ll be surprised.

This was one of the first movies I watched on my OLED tv. So underrated, definitely. I think it’s because it got compared with Heat, which is a high bar to say the least.

Great movie. I always think of Departed as my favorite cop movie but this is up there...and of course Bad Boys.

Collateral was mostly shot on digital, a couple years before Miami Vice. Both movies used a lot of available light night shots, but the way they shot it with the digital cameras really made it feel like it was shot on tv news cameras. The grain and noise and smoothness of motion is a little jarring of an effect. Also the colors in daytime shots are super washed out. I remember the sequence of them flying that fancy plane over mountains or whatever and it was just drab.
The digital cameras at the time were significantly lower quality than even what can be produced with a DSLR nowadays, but they didn’t necessarily have to look the way they did in Mann’s movies. He was going for that look.
His movie that really didn’t work for me with the digital look was Public Enemies. It’s supposed to be a period piece and yet I remember some of the action sequences just looked like shitty video. It takes you out of the theme.
That said, I do enjoy both Collateral and Miami Vice. Much of Miami Vice is just, well, stupid, but it was successful at creating atmosphere.

Good point. I remember seeing the ‘making of’ documentary, and not the entire movie was shot on digital. Some of the S outh A merican daytime scenes were shot on chrome film; again because Mann wanted that look.

I hadn’t seen Heat until years
after
I saw Miami Vice (several times).. it’s hard to compare Heat with Miami Vice.. I feel like they are out to do different things, but they both do one thing right. Mood.
Also, Thief was a great moody film too with a pretty decent set of cars in it as well.
Collateral is another favorite of mine.. amazing movie.
